When Aljon Laborte’s father boarded the MV Princess of the Stars en route to Cebu in 2008, he didn’t think that this will set off a chain of events that will change his life drastically.
“I was still in high school when my dad died,” Aljon said. “He was one of the victims of the MV Princess of the Stars.”

This is why the Louis Coson Friendship Cup Scholars keep growing each year. In 2008, golfing friends of the late Ambassador Louis Coson decided to sponsor a golf tournament, proceeds of which will honor his memory through a scholarship program. With the help of SM Foundation, the first batch of scholars, all children of caddies/umbrella girls or boys, were awarded scholarship grants in colleges within the vicinity of Tagaytay Midlands where the tournament was first held.

SM Foundation’s sustainable agriculture program teaches farmers effective farming
Farming was farthest from Lemie Leonida’s mind back in 2009 when she retired from teaching Math after 21 years at Lambunao National High School in Iloilo. Leonida, 53, said she looked to other sources of income after Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) literally swept away her husband’s sand and gravel business in 2013.
The La Trinidad Main Health Center in Benguet, which caters to 16 barangays, has been renovated and accredited with PhilHealth for its out-patient benefit package (OPB). This means that the 21,425 households comprising these barangays can now avail of treatment in the Health Center. Thanks to SM Foundation and BDO Foundation who undertook the complete renovation, quality health service is brought to these communities.
On September 21, the Felicidad T. Sy Foundation, Inc. (FTSyFI) held a mass wedding for 20 SM employee-couples at the Shrine of Jesus, The Way, The Truth and The Life in Pasay City.

SM Foundation chalks up another addition to its long list of military facilities renovated with the recent turnover of the Operating and Delivery Room (OR/DR) complex along with the officers and cadets ward of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA)’s Fort Del Pilar Station Hospital in Baguio. This is SM Foundation’s 13th military facility renovated to date.
New SM scholar Kenneth Gayagomes and his father Hugo were all smiles as they signed the contract to formalize Kenneth’s scholarship grant from SM Foundation last April 8, 2015. A total of 145 students from NCR and nearby areas of Bulacan, Baliwag, Sta. Rosa, Calamba, San Pablo and Cavite, were welcomed as SM Foundation’s first batch of scholars for school year 2015-2016.
Twenty couples were married in church ceremonies recently at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life. The mass wedding, sponsored by Sy matriarch Felicidad T. Sy and family, is among the many religious activities of the Felicidad T. Sy Foundation to strengthen the relationship of the couples and inspire them to lead God-centered family lives. This is the Foundation’s 2nd mass wedding.
