SM Foundation reduces classroom shortage in Pulilan

Students of Balatong Elementary School excited with their new school building

SM Foundation has turned over its 89th school building to Balatong Elementary School in Pulilan, Bulacan.

Balatong Elementary School is the only public school servicing three barangays in Pulilan -- Barangay Balatong, Penabatan, and Tenejero.

With the new two-story, four-classroom school building donated by SM Prime Holdings, Inc., the former classroom to student ratio of 1:50 has improved to 1:46. The classrooms will be used by four sections of fifth grade students.

The new school building follows the Minimum Performance Standards and Specifications (MPSS) in the design of Department of Education (DepEd) school buildings to ensure the comfort and safety of the occupants of the structure. To address flooding that the administration had to previously confront, the building was raised to the same level as the school’s multi-purpose hall.

The classrooms are furnished with a total of 200 armchairs (with 20 left-handed desks), four sets of teachers’ table and chair, 16 wall fans, four wall clocks, blackboards and a toilet for each classroom. SM is the only foundation that provides left-handed desks for left-handed students.

The donation was graciously received by Mayor Maria Rosario Ochoa Montejo, Vice Mayor Ricardo Candido, council members and barangay officials. Balatong Principal Michele Sollestre thanked SM Prime and SM Foundation, saying that their donation would go a long way in inspiring the students to do better at school and KSK graduate teaches young students how to farm will be the source of pride for their young students. SM Foundation has donated a total of 284 classrooms nationwide since it started its school building program in 2002. The Foundation oversees the maintenance of its classrooms and takes care of building repairs.
