SM Foundation recently awarded scholarship grants to five incoming college students after the successful conduct of the 16th Louis Coson Friendship Cup last June 7 at the Tagaytay Midlands Golf and Country Club. Proceeds from the golf tournaments will be used for the schooling of these scholars who are children/siblings of golf caddies.

The Louis Coson Friendship Cup, named in honor of the late Louis Coson, a business luminary and well-known benefactor, is an annual golf tournament that raises funds for scholarships. It was organized by his friends and colleagues as they saw fit to combine Coson’s love for golf with his legacy of charity. To date, this initiative is sponsoring 60 scholars in college.

Julius Cezar Petate, one of the grantees, expressed his sincerest gratitude toward the Foundation and the organizers and participants of the golf tournaments. “Napaka-lucky ko po dahil naging part po ang SM Foundation sa journey ko para makatawid sa hirap. Kung wala ang scholarship na ito, talagang 50-50 na po na makatuloy ako sa kolehiyo,” Petate said.

Petate is the youngest of the eight siblings; their eldest works as golf caddie. Both of his parents don’t have stable jobs. He recalled his hardships during his Senior High School days as he served as service crew in a fast food chain to provide for his own schooling. Now, through this scholarship, Petate will take up Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities.

The other scholars likewise thanked the Foundation and its partners for providing this opportunity for them to go to college and be an instrument to uplift their families out of poverty.

Present at the event were members of the Sy family, led by Nanang Felicidad Sy, Hans Sy, Herbert Sy, and Mara Coson; SM Foundation executive director for Education Program Carmen Linda Atayde; and other partners and participants of the golf tournaments.
