Situated at the northwest most portion of Valenzuela, Barangay Wawang Pulo is surrounded by fish ponds. Each morning, some students of Wawang Pulo Elementary School ride an improvised “bangka” to go to school. For some time however, their school lacked classrooms. Because of this, grade school students shared classrooms with high school students which made it hard for them to concentrate. It also made the younger students susceptible to bullying by older students.
Principal Arcenoel D. Zapatos felt deeply for the students of the Wawang Pulo Elementary School and sought ways to improve the situation for their students and teachers. His prayers were answered when SM Prime Holdings, Inc., SM Foundation, and Deutsche Bank AG Manila teamed up to donate a two-storey, four-classroom school building to the school under SM Foundation’s School Building Program. The new building came furnished with new arm chairs, wall fans, blackboards and teachers’ desk sets. Volunteers from Deutsche Bank AG Manila also painted inspirational murals on the classroom wall for the students.
With the new and adequate facilities, both elementary and high school students of Wawang Pulo can now learn better.
“The new school building looks great in our compound,” Principal Arcenoel said. “Now, there are lesser risks of bullying. The wholeschool also looks more beautiful than before--the building looks good and the murals are amazing. The students can now play safely within our own backyard.”
